Cindy's Job At The Birch Street Nursing Home: Thanksgiving Edition

Today I helped the patients at the Birch Street Nursing Home celebrate Thanksgiving. I used some of the money I'd made to buy several cans of cranberry sauce, corn, green beans and yams. And for dessert, I bought a pumpkin pie. During the feast, the patients took turns saying what they were thankful for. Most of them were thankful for the poker club and that there were no more leaves to rake in the front yard. Mrs. Henley was thankful for her third slice of pumpkin pie.

Cindy's Job At The Birch Street Nursing Home: Thanksgiving Edition

The patients at the Birch Street Nursing Home had a good Thanksgiving, except for Mr. Pearlman, who found one more trip wire left by Mrs. Patterson. While everyone else sat around the poker table and said what he or she was thankful for, Mr. Pearlman stayed in his room, resting his swollen knees. Mrs. Lieberman said she's thankful for the extra money brought in for the poker club by renting the three rooms to Mr. Smith. Mrs. Patterson said she is thankful that her trip wires work, and added that it's just a matter of time before she catches Mrs. Shimshack. Mrs. Kunkle is thankful that there aren't more windows and light switches at the Birch Street Nursing Home, because then her rounds would take all day. Mrs. Macmillan said she's thankful she didn't have to listen to Mr. Pearlman whining after today's fall. Mr. Matthews is thankful that his children's Christmas catalogues came early this year. Mrs. Henley said she's still thankful that one of Cinnamon's doctors accidentally ended up in her room. And I'm thankful that there haven't been any fires at the Birch Street Nursing Home this year, especially since we haven't been practicing our fire drill.

It's that special day when we declare what we are thankful for. Well, today I am thankful for professional football referees who are interested in making an extra buck. I have bets on all three games today, Kiddies. So far I am one for one!

Happy Thanksgiving! I spent the holiday at the Birch Street Nursing Home, because the nurses had taken the day off to spend with their families. Each year, I ask the patients to share what they are thankful for. This year there was a common theme. Mrs. Kunkel, Mrs. Henley, Mr. Pearlman, Mr. Matthews, Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Macmillan all said they are thankful to still be alive. Mrs. Lieberman is thankful that the poker club is back up and running, and nearly at full capacity. I am thankful that homeschooling has given me more opportunities to help Grandmother with her experiments. On the way home from the Birch Street Nursing Home, I had just enough time before dinner to make a brief stop at the Birch Street Cemetery to say hi to Mrs. Lowe, Mr. Oliveras and Hazel.

A Thanksgiving Tip From Grandmother Winsome

Because of the pandemic, it is dangerous to have guests for Thanksgiving dinner this year. So to include those people in your festivities, simply send them photos of your meal before you dig in. You might very well discover you find this preferable to actually having guests in your home. It could be the start of a new Thanksgiving tradition.

Happy Thanksgiving, Kiddies! We here at Winsome Headquarters got a late start on our holiday celebration because I was on a roll down in my basement working on an important new experiment. But now we've had our big meal, and each member of the Winsome Family has said what he or she is thankful for this year. Here is what a few members of the family had to say:

Jane is thankful for relaxed return policies during the holiday season.

Edward is thankful that the dry cleaners were able to remove most of the stains from his Santa Claus outfit.

Cindy is thankful she was able to make some new friends this year, Mrs. Kunkle and Mrs. Macmillan at the Birch Street Nursing Home.

Cindy's Job At The Birch Street Nursing Home: Thanksgiving Edition

Happy Thanksgiving! I was able to put in a full day at the Birch Street Nursing Home without fear of missing any of the Winsome holiday celebration, because Grandmother has decided to put off our big dinner until later this evening after she finishes up some special work in her laboratory. Following Grandmother's Thanksgiving tradition, I once again asked the patients what they are thankful for. Here is what some of them said:

Mr. Oliveras is thankful that he hasn't tripped since the fire extinguisher went missing last month.

Mrs. Henley is thankful that this month's fire didn't damage the medicine supply.

Mrs. Kunkle is thankful that she is back on her feet and able to touch all the windows and light switches herself.

Mrs. Lowe is thankful that her son will be arriving at any moment to take her back home.

Mr. Pearlman is thankful that his current guide dog has not bitten him or run away.

Mrs. Patterson is thankful that she has been able to thwart Mrs. Shimshack's recent attempts to get back into the Birch Street Nursing Home.

Mrs. Macmillan wrote that she is thankful she can't hear Mrs. Patterson.

Mr. Matthews is thankful for the brilliant idea he just got for a sequel to his story about Mr. Matthers and Candy.

Hazel, as usual, was not responsive, but I am certain she is thankful for the ray of sunlight through her window.

Each year at Thanksgiving we at Winsome Headquarters state what we are thankful for as part of our holiday celebration. But this year since Grandmother is in Hawaii and I am working today, I've decided to ask some of the patients here at the Birch Street Nursing Home what they are thankful for.

Here is what they told me:

Mrs. Geffner is thankful for a warm blanket.

Mrs. Diaz is thankful for each new day.

Mr. Pearlman is thankful for his new seeing eye dog, Sniffles The Fourth, who just got back from seeing the vet.

Ms. Jenkins is thankful for her memories of previous holidays.

Mrs. Henley is thankful for second helpings of medicine.

Mr. Matthews is thankful for back-to-school catalogues.

Mrs. Patterson is thankful that Mrs. Shimshack is dead.

Hazel was unresponsive, but I believe she is thankful for her window.

And I am thankful for my very own laboratory, where I hope to conduct many important experiments.

Grandmother Winsome's Thanksgiving Advice: Wrapping Up

Kiddies, several of you have written to me, concerned about the Thanksgiving holiday and the stress of having guests in your home. Well, Grandmother is here to help. Here are several ways you can let your guests know it’s time for them to leave after Thanksgiving dinner.

• Burn the dessert 
• Turn up the music so people can’t hear each other  
• Turn off the furnace
• Tell your guests the toilet is backed up 
• Tell them there have been a lot of car thefts at night in the area 
• Remind them of the great deals they can get at stores if they get up early enough
• Announce that it’s time for cleanup 
• Bring up old conflicts
• Talk about your money problems 
• Say you’ve run out of alcohol 
• Turn off the lights

Kiddies, I've received many messages the past week from fans seeking help in coping with the Thanksgiving holiday. Last night I addressed concerns regarding preparations. Another concern is the Thanksgiving meal conversation. We’re often told of topics to avoid. But which topics should we pursue? Well, Grandmother is here to help. Here is a list of conversation topics which will be interesting without leading to conflicts.

Grandmother Winsome's Thanksgiving Advice: Preparations

I've received many messages regarding Thanksgiving, and the stress that goes along with it. Well, Grandmother is here to help. Here are several things to consider when preparing for the big day.

• Check to make sure your guests have no dietary restrictions
• Purchase a large mat to put just inside your door for all your guests' shoes
• Give your guests a firm start time, so they're not surprising you by arriving early 
• Make a mix CD of songs that will keep you in good spirits
• Keep to a minimum all food and drink that could stain 
• Make sure you have plenty of napkins
• Remove any breakables from your dining room and living room
• Designate one room in the house as off-limits by closing the door (This will be a room you can sneak off to in moments of need)
• Stock your off-limits room with a special stash of alcohol or other relaxation aids
• Remind yourself that Thanksgiving will be over soon
